Helpful Tips

IDENTIFICATION

You must present satisfactory evidence of your identity. The identification document presented must be current or issued within three years of the date of services (in some cases), per Indiana State Law.

Notary Wording on your documents

If notary wording is not included anywhere on your documents, you must ask the notary for the type of notary certificate you need for that document.  By law, notaries are not permitted to advise on what you should choose, but we can describe the purpose of each certificate to you.

Below, you can review the purpose and image of each notarial certificate to help you choose which one you need. This will be very helpful during your consultation call with me.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Purpose: Choose this when you need to confirm that you signed your document voluntarily and understand what you are signing.

What This Means for You:

  • You will appear before the notary to confirm your identity

  • You will confirm that the signature on the document is yours

  • No oath or affirmation is required

Common Examples:

  • Real estate documents

  • Powers of attorney

  • Contracts and agreements

  • Business documents

JURAT (Oath or Affirmation)

Purpose: Choose this when you are required to swear or affirm that the information in your document is true.

What This Means for You:

  • You will sign the document in the presence of the notary

  • You will take an oath or affirmation

  • The notary will witness your signature and administer the oath

Common Examples:

  • Affidavits

  • Sworn statements

  • Court documents

COPY CERTIFICATION BY DOCUMENT CUSTODIAN

Purpose: Choose this when you need to declare that your copy is true and accurate, and have your signature on that statement notarized.

What This Means for You:

  • You are responsible for confirming the copy is accurate

  • The notary notarizes your statement—not the document itself

  • You must have the original document available

Common Examples:

  • Personal records

  • Licenses

  • Documents for apostille or international use

PLEASE NOTE: This notarial certificate is not the same as the regular Copy Certification. With this certificate, YOU will sign an affidavit.

With a regular Copy Certification which is described next, the Notary will fill, sign, and seal the certificate.

COPY CERTIFICATION (Where Permitted)

Purpose: Choose this when you need a copy of document to be certified as a true and accurate copy of the original (when allowed by law).

What This Means for You:

  • You must present the original document

  • The notary will compare the copy to the original

  • Availability depends on document type and state law

Common Examples:

  • Documents for international use

  • Certain non-recordable personal documents

PLEASE NOTE: With this Copy Certification, the Notary will fill, sign, and seal the certificate. You will NOT need to sign anything.
